Ohio University has removed Larry Nighswander from his position as director of the School of Visual Communications in reaction to a $3 million sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a student. The suit alleges that Nighswander coerced the student to pose topless in a university studio, and that he touched her and made sexually suggestive remarks during the shoot.
"I am vehemently denying the charges," Nighswander said in a telephone interview with PDN. The student complained first to university officials last fall. She sued after the school closed its investigation in mid-March and took no action, citing lack of evidence of any wrongdoing. Nighswander, who joined the Ohio University faculty from National Geographic in the mid Nineties, isn’t denying students have posed nude for him. "We have a commercial photography program," he says. "Our fashion and portrait classes involve shooting things that involve nudity." Since the nearest modeling agency is 75 miles away, he says, it’s only practical to use students as models.
Since the lawsuit was filed, however, two other female students have come forward with complaints against Nighswander.
